Level 1a
The Beginners courses are suitable for those with no prior knowledge of an Introduction to NZSL & Deaf Culture. NZSL level 1a introduces learners to New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), the language of the Deaf community and one of the official languages in New Zealand. This course will focus on receptive skills and mastering basic communicative functions in NZSL.
Level 1a
The Beginners courses are suitable for those with no prior knowledge of an Introduction to NZSL & Deaf Culture. NZSL level 1a introduces learners to New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), the language of the Deaf community and one of the official languages in New Zealand. This course will focus on receptive skills and mastering basic communicative functions in NZSL.
Level 2b
NZSL level 2b is a follow up course to NZSL level 2a. This course will extend the receptive and expressive skills of students at an intermediate level. This course is suitable for those who have completed at least 75 hours of NZSL tuition.
Level 1a

NZSL level 1a introduces learners to New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), the language of the Deaf community and one of the official languages in New Zealand. This course will focus on receptive skills and mastering basic communicative functions in NZSL.
Level 2c
Level 1a

NZSL level 1c is a follow-up course to NZSL level 1b (approximately 30 hours of NZSL tuition). Learners will work towards the following goals:

By the end of NZSL level 1, learners will be able to understand and use NZSL in simple conversations on familiar topics. Understand and use basic grammatical structures of NZSL in simple sentences or questions. Appropriately use visual conversational behaviours in NZSL. Show basic understanding and awareness of Deaf culture and community in New Zealand.

There are four modules for each level: a, b, c and d from Beginner to Advanced.
Each focus on a different aspect of Sign Language as its practical application. Typically, each course is made up of 7 weekly classes, each averaging 1.5 - 2 hours. Courses are either in personal or online.

Beginner Sign Language
The NZSL Intermediate Sign Language course consists of four sub-levels:
NZSL Level 1a – Unit 1-3
Introduces basic vocabulary and simple phrases, focusing on greetings and everyday expressions, with an emphasis on visual communication and non-manual signals.
NZSL Level 1b – Unit 4-5
Expands vocabularyrelated to personal information and daily activities. Learners practice forming simple sentences and engaging in basic conversations.
NZSL Level 1c – Unit 6-7
Deepens understanding of NZSL grammar and structure, introducing storytelling and topics like hobbies and interests, enhancing expressive and receptive skills.
NZSL Level 1d – Unit 8-9
Focuses on complex dialogues and descriptive language. Learners refine signing skills and gain confidence in using NZSL in various social contexts.
Intermediate Sign Language
The NZSL Intermediate Sign Language course consists of four sub-levels:
NZSL Level 2a – Unit 10-11
Expands vocabulary and complex sentence structures; learners discuss personal experiences with time markers and negation.
NZSL Level 2b – Unit 12-13
Focuses on storytelling and conversational skills, enhancing fluency and cultural understanding in NZSL.
Improves comprehension and expressive skills through role-playing and discussions on community and social issues.
NZSL Level 2c - Unit 14-15
Improves comprehension and expressive skills through role-playing and discussions on community and social issues.
NZSL Level 2d - Unit 16-17
Develops advanced conversational abilities and critical thinking, with an emphasis on negotiation and persuasion in diverse settings.
