To enter Level 1b, you must have completed Level 1a. If you have not completed the previous level with me, I will need to assess your NZSL skills to ensure you are ready for the next level. If you attended previous levels with another teacher, please provide proof of your attendance, such as a certificate or a letter from your previous teacher. Alternatively, you can opt for a one-on-one assessment for me to evaluate your NZSL skills.
A qualified Deaf Teacher brings invaluable insights and authentic experiences that enrich the learning process. They are not only proficient in NZSL but also deeply connected to the Deaf community, offering students a genuine understanding of its culture, values, and history.
No, sign language is not the same worldwide. Each country or region often has its own unique sign language, with distinct vocabulary, grammar, and cultural context. For example, New Zealand (NZSL) is different from American Sign Language (ASL) or British Sign Language (BSL). While some signs may be similar, it's important to learn the specific sign language used in the community you wish to communicate with.
Yes, if you miss this term, you can typically enrol in the next term. Most NZSL classes have multiple terms throughout the year, allowing for flexible enrolment. However, it's a good idea to check with the specific program or institution to confirm their enrolment policies and any prerequisites for the next term. To move up to the next level a student has to have attended 80% of the classes in a term or made arrangements with me to have private lessons to catch up.
1. Learning NZSL can be challenging at first, especially since it is a visual language with its own grammar and structure. However, many learners find it engaging and intuitive. With practice and immersion in the Deaf community, it becomes easier and more enjoyable.
2. Do I need to know anything about Deaf Culture before I start learning NZSL?
While it's not mandatory, having an understanding of Deaf culture greatly enhances your learning experience. It helps you appreciate the language's nuances and fosters effective communication with the Deaf community.
The number of people in a community class for New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) can vary widely depending on the organisation offering the class. Generally, classes may have anywhere from 5 to 20 participants. Smaller class sizes often allow for more personalised attention and interaction, while larger classes can foster a sense of community and diverse perspectives. It's best to check with specific providers for their class sizes!
I work with businesses and typically require a minimum of 16 participants to run a private class. The more participants there are, the lower the rate per person. If I need to travel to teach a class, additional travel costs may apply. Please contact me to discuss the best options for your business.
If the course you have enrolled in does not meet minimum enrolment requirements, the course will be cancelled. We will notify you of the cancellation by email or text providing you with the option of signing up for another course or a full refund.
